The Host - Stephenie Meyer

Wednesday, February 4, 2009

I don't know what it is about the Stephenie Meyer books but they force me to finish them in one sitting - which usually means I'm up all night and the next day till i finish

I liked the Host better than the Twilight Series. Her writing seems to have improved.

Somehow i wasn't surprised that the characters in this book gasped and chuckled just like in Twilight - this seems to be a signature in her books now. A bad one, but hey, whatever makes her happy.

The Host did have a bigger storyline that the Twilight series and although most of it was predictable (like the ending and knowing what Wanda would do in the end and how the others wouldn't let her go that easily) it was still a good read. Some parts of it were a surprise - Like Kyle in the end.

Favourite line:
"The humans never did figure love out. How much is physical, how much in the mind? How much accident and how much fate? Why did perfect matches crumble and impossible couples thrive? I don't know the answers any better than they did. Love simply is where it is."
There were more lines, but i stopped trying to remember after a while.

Midnight Sun - Stephenie Meyer

Thursday, January 29, 2009

Twilight was the only book where i thought Edward was a bit likeable. And bitch as i might, since I'm addicted to this stupid saga, i had to read this one.

On one had, Edward is a lot cooler in Twilight than he is in Midnight Sun. It helps knowing that he saw what the future would be and that explained some of his actions in Twilight. But the stalking and gushing over Bella was just too much.

On the other hand, i did quite like this the best from the series so far. Well, all the other books have Bella's point of view and the fact that this one doesn't makes it better by a mile. No overload of Bella is a good thing (no lines on the everyday cooking, for example). The fact that he can read minds helps here since then you know what the others are thinking too.

I did open Twilight and start reading it trying to see if from both perspectives, and that made it a bit of fun reading this one.

I might be waiting for this book to come out. Please don't screw it up Steph.

Breaking Dawn - Stephenie Meyer

Umm... Holy CROW!!!

I do not know where to begin with this one. Twilight started out so well (not), and as bad as i keep saying it is it's also still very addictive. But then it went downhill and then came Breaking Dawn. I'm not sure whether i like this one or not.

I hate Bella in it. And I'm not sure what Meyer was trying to do. She started Twilight by shattering all the Vampire myths - no garlic, sun, stabbing and created her own ones to suit her story. Which is fine, I will ignore the sparkling vampires for a minute.

But in BD she's just shattered everything she wrote before. Edward is fathering a baby? Bella drinks and enjoys human blood while still human? She fainted in Twilight remember. Then she doesn't not having to go through all the bloodlust once she's a vampire?

And Bella? The first part from Bella's point of view was good, so was Jacobs. But the third part once she becomes a vampire was where Bella went into selfish Bitch mode. Poor Jacob. He had no one around to slap some sense into him. And poor Edward also. He had no one to tell him he's been around long enough to not behave like a jackass for Bella. Being in love doesn't mean you lose a sense of yourself or become an ass.

Well, atleast there were some surprises - Renesmee and all that drama before she was born (ok, it was so lame that i was surprised) ; Edward completely falling apart.
The end was just too predictable though.

Either way, i'm just happy this is over now. Can you tell i'm tired of writing these reviews?

Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer (also know as All Brawn and no Brain)

Wednesday, January 28, 2009

You would think that since the Vampires have been here for these decades and decades they would have also enhanced on their intelligence. But no, Nobody figured it was Victoria? To have Bella crack that puzzle was just downright insulting for everyone else in that book older that a mosquito.

ok, to being at the beginning...

Bella seems to have lost even the wee bit of self respect i had left for her after the last two books. Somewhere in between she seemed to pick herself up a bit when she went to Italy. But now she's this ass who only has eyes for the Vampires and Werewolves - Humans are ignored, be it her parents or friends.
She wants Edward but wants Jacob as well. If you're so in love with Vampy, why do you need the other guy too? So selfish and self centred, she's stringing them both along in a way. And kissing them both.
Also she wants to be with Edward and wants to die for him but she doesn't want OTHER people (who she doesn't care about) to think that she;s getting married young cause she screwed up and is pregnant? To borrow from Edward - Bella you are totally absurd.

Edward has just gone into disgusting mode. Despite his sparkling nature in Twilight there was still something about him that you might think is charming or attractive.
But in this one, he's just disgusting. It made me want to puke a bit. And despite all the controlling and obsessive behaviour, he was ok with her running to Jacob and kissing Jacob. No respect left.

Jacob. Hmmm. what to say. Why would he still want Bella after she treats him like her bitch. Again, no respect left for him.

Rosalie and her story i quite liked. Alice i still love and always will.

Sigh, so that's one more book from this stupid series done with. I stayed up the whole of Thursday night reading this. I'm still not sure why. As stupid as i think these books are i guess i am addicted now.

On to book 4 now

New Moon - Stephenie Meyer

Oh Lord. Somebody please kill Bella soon. Just so she can stop with the grief she's giving me.

I mean C'mon woman. Have a bloody spine and pick yourself up. How this can be someone who's the 'heroine' in a novel i cannot understand. Which century was Meyer living in when she came up with all that?

This book actually made Twilight look like the best book ever. Almost. OK OK. Not.

Edward and Bella happily in 'love' - Bella bleeds, Jasper goes woohoo - Edward realises ONE BOOK TOO LATE that he really should have left a long time ago. He tells her he's moved on, she forgets its all lust and blood for him and really believes him. Follow a million pages of a painfully pathetic Bella. Then she goes psycho trying to imagine Edward talking to her when she's in el stupido mode. Enter Alice, who i still think is the coolest, who thinks Bella's dead. Ed darling goes el Stupido Stupido and realises he doesn't wanna live if the girl he himself left is dead !! And then Bella runs to rescue the macho marble-top Edward.

Sigh.

Atleast there was Jacob, who was the only one who seemed to have a wee bit of sense. Other than when it came to Bella. He kinda made you want to slap some sense into him and tell him he's a smart guy (and werewolf also) he should get on with life and better women
Yes, i will still read the next book because i;m stupid like that, have nothing better to do and it is kinda addictive. But really, this is a harebrained relationship they have. Edward is no God. He treats her like shit and gets away with it cause he tells her he loves her.

For all those girls out there who may be influenced by this book - Really. Get. A. Life. And some real friends.

Somebody slap em both!!! Twilight by Stephenie Meyer (alternatively called Dazzling Sparkling Vampires!!!)

Tuesday, January 27, 2009

Ok, some confessions first before I get to the questions.

  • I loved the book – in that sometimes I love completely mindless books. I mostly have very little work to do at work, and so this was a very good book to be reading till the clock reads 17:30
  • People at work might have been a lil concerned with the “chuckles” and jackass grins I had on my face when I was reading this. That’s because completely mindless stuff does this to me often.

Once in a while, its good to read completely mindless stuff – which is why I’ve read four novels of Carl Hiaasen so far and also why I’ve now read the entire Twilight Saga. Again, don’t judge me.

Bella is annoying, clumsy and in damsel-in-distress mode in the whole book. He’s hot and that’s why she loves him. But thinks she is unworthy of his love seeing as he is so gorgeous. Edward has no sane personality, (unless you count sparkling), cant make up his mind He is however borderline abusive, controlling, and I think a lil nuts. He eavesdrops on her, stalk her at nights, and have issues with her ‘human’ friends. CREEPY. The only reason we’re given for him being in love with Bella is that he cant read her and her blood smells sweet – How can this be what all those crazy women out there are screaming about

I’m gonna need to have a long conversation with by Boyfriend is this is how love is actually supposed to be. Spineless women and stalky boyfriend who find each other hot !!!

I’m also sure all the real vampires are cringing out there.

Figured I’d read the book and then watch the movie and then also thought maybe the movie will ruin it for me… Oh boy was I wrong. I had tears in my eyes while watching it. They paid people to act like that? My Goldfish could have acted better.

Questions:

  • Why would anyone want to repeat High School over and over and over again voluntarily?
  • So what does this book have going for it? Almost No plot until 3/4th of the book is over, no depth to the characters, not the best of writing, Obsessive main couple. Ooh, but it does have Sparkly Vampires and Stupid Women (Except Alice, Her I like)
  • Why when you search for Twilight on google, is there a separate google search for Edward Cullen who is ONLY A CHARACTER? Why?
  • Why so many references to Edwards beauty. Isn't that weird to talk that way about a guy.
Anyone else who still couldn’t picture him?
  • Is it normal for teenage girls to like marble lips and marble/stone/cold things?
  • Am I the only one who is a bit disgusted with the constant references to the sweet smell of his (Edward’s) breath
  • I smelled his cool breath in my face. Sweet, delicious, the scent made my mouth water. EWWWW
  • Where can I find a guy who talks about emotions and all the other sentimental stuff so much? No wait, I take that back. Don’t want.
  • Yes, he’s in a body of a 17 yr old. But he’s been there for a 100 years. Wouldn’t he have some maturity?
  • Is it ok to be ok with the fact that a guy secretly watched you when you sleep?
  • The perfect ending to a Vampire Story – Attending the Prom. Not even 2 lines on how James was taken care of, but Attending The Prom?!!
  • Vampire Baseball? Vegetarian Vampires?

Moral of the story for me:

  • I need to find more work to do. I cannot keep reading books like these to while away the time.
  • No, I take that back. I need to get back to reading GOOD books that classify as Literature
  • Always follow the Golden Rule: If there’s hype and people are fawning over it – IT HAS TO BE CRAP
  • No, I have not lost my mind and it is completely ok to slap people when they use the word Dazzle, chuckle, gasp, and sparkle.
  • Umm.. Holy Crow !!!

OK. Fine. Despite all of what I wrote above, I probably may still read this again. Its one of those things that don’t make sense. Guilty pleasure is what someone called it, I think. Yes, it is a stupid book, but that never stopped anyone before.
